The Wind Garden with its moving Moments

The wind garden is located between the Fürstenhof terraces. The oval shape and arrangement of the wind garden in the extension of the central axis is reminiscent of the Baroque period when the palace park was created, when the strict Baroque garden architecture influenced the garden design with geometric shapes and axes of symmetry.
Our wind garden is an interplay of many design elements
No other plant fits the theme of wind better than grasses. Because of their delicate transparency, lightness and their varied uses in garden design, ornamental grasses deserve a special place in the castle park. Karl Foerster already described grasses as the “HARPS” in the garden concert.
Together with large-leaved or large-flowered perennials, the “TAUKEN” are also added. Red and orange-flowering perennials such as daylilies, torch lilies and coneflowers dance along with the grasses and provide color in the wind garden. Our ornamental grasses are less impressive because of their opulent colors, but rather because of their delicate structures, multifaceted shapes and dynamic lightness. The composition of the perennials in the wind garden consists of 65% of 13 different types of grasses and varieties. When selecting the grasses, attention was paid to an exciting combination. The different growth heights create spaces and gently frame the wind garden, like a transparent veil.
The interplay of leaf textures, foliage color and fruit decoration are other important design elements that appear from summer until late autumn. The different types of grasses and varieties try to steal each other’s show. The upright stalks of the flower panicles of the very early budding garden riding grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora) ‘Karl Foerster’ are particularly striking. The straight and sturdy stalks with their golden panicles remain standing throughout the winter and still shine in the winter sun
The garden riding grass can be used as a rhythmic structure builder in the bed or as a transparent hedge like in the wind garden. A hint of burgundy red! The bright burgundy leaf tips of the purple switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) ‘Shenandoah’ shine almost all summer long. At the end of the season the leaves take on an intense red autumn color. In the backlight of the low sun, the filigree leaves and fruit clusters shine particularly intensely.
The purple switchgrass is particularly suitable as a splash of color in flowering perennial beds. Another very attractive, early and richly flowering grass is the small pennisetum (Pennisetum alopecuroides) ‘Hameln’, which remains attractive all winter long. The variety ‘Hameln’ is a compact and vigorous variety that turns golden yellow in autumn and boasts beautiful flower clusters.
Very suitable for large plantings and floral, vibrant displays in your own garden. There are grasses for every taste, for every design style and for many different locations. Their great colors in autumn and their enchanting winter silhouettes make them a special eye-catcher.
Only cut back ornamental grasses after winter, creating bizarre and beautiful garden images even in the cold winter months. This also offers many beneficial insects a safe place to retreat during the winter months.
